Department of Film Studies originally transferred to the faculty in 1968 from the Film Academy (FAMU). Until 1996, film studies formed one department with theatre studies, since then, it constituted itself as an independent discipline.
Currently, film studies is taught in 3 year B.A., continuing in 2-year M.A. and 3-year PhD., icluding PhD. in English.
Main research projects of the department focus first of all on the history of Czech cinema in Central-European contexts. There are also projects oriented towards gender analysis and theoretical studies dealing with role of film in visual culture. Besides, several researchers deal with the Czech New Wave, and history of cinema of other areas (Francophone, Spanish-speaking, African etc.).
