Film & Sociology came into existence in 1991 with the aim of maintaining and developing the values of the Czech film documentary, establishing closer ties between filmmakers and sociology and chiefly capturing that dramatic period, to be a witness to what is happening around us. The results surpassed expectations and the Czech audience could see, not only on their television screens but also in the cinema, works that had originated thanks to Film & Sociology. Under the heading of Film & Sociology, Czech Television has up to now shown more than 170 documentary films. Five films have been seen on the cinema circuit.
Film & Sociology is the producer of the film Občan Havel (Citizen Havel) – the most successful documentary film on the Czech cinema circuit since 1989 – visited in cinemas by an audience of 160,000.
Film & Sociology also organises seminars, debates and creative workshops. From 2002-2005 it organised public discussion evenings about the mass media and their position in Czech society called Everyday Media Spooks, in cooperation with the Centre for Media Studies (CEMES). The discussions took place with financial support from the Ministry of Culture of the Czech Republic.
Film & Sociology is a completely unique society in this country, and maybe in the world. Its programme is the production of documentary films which capture the social transformations at the turn of the millennium chiefly (but not only) in Central Europe. It shows these changes in stories about real people. A unique "library" has emerged, an original contribution to the store of cultural memories of Central Europe. This unified and at the same time thematically varied collection of films is systematically added to – in some cases, by a record of the fates of the same protagonists or by a return to analogous problems. From this point of view, the value of these films continually expands, so that they are enriched and not spoiled by time.
